A reading app by Alterras LLC
Luum is a reading app that runs entirely on your iPhone. The whole app is free, with no limit on books; you can leave an optional tip. You are responsible for the books and pages you bring into it. The AI features run on your device and can be wrong. The app is provided as-is. By using Luum, you agree to these terms.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Alterras LLC, a New York limited liability company ("Alterras", "we", "us", "our"). They govern your use of the Luum mobile application for iPhone ("Luum" or "the app"). By downloading, installing, or using Luum, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
Luum is a reading and study app. It opens EPUB and PDF books and web articles you choose, reads them aloud at a pace you set, lets you ask questions about the book you are reading, and turns what you read into flashcards, quizzes, and spaced review. Everything runs on your device. There is no account, no sign-in, and no Alterras server.
The books, documents, and web pages you import into Luum are yours to bring, and they stay on your device. Alterras never receives, stores, or reviews them.
You are responsible for having the right to use what you import. Only import content you own, have lawfully obtained, or are otherwise permitted to read and copy for personal use. Luum does not remove or bypass DRM or other copy protection, and you must not use it to infringe anyone's copyright or other rights.
The highlights, notes, flashcards, and review history you create in Luum belong to you and remain on your device.
Luum's Ask feature, flashcard drafting, and quizzes use Apple Intelligence on your device where your iPhone supports it. These features are processed on your device by Apple's on-device models, not by Alterras. If your device does not support Apple Intelligence, those features may be limited or unavailable.
Luum is free to download and free to use, with every feature and as many books as you like. There is no purchase to unlock anything, no subscription, and no recurring charge. If you want to support the work, you can leave an optional tip in the app. Full tip terms are in Section 15 (Tip Terms) below.
All tips are processed by Apple through the App Store. Alterras does not receive, store, or have access to your payment information. For pricing, refunds, or billing issues, contact Apple Support directly at getsupport.apple.com. Apple's refund policy applies to all Luum tips.
Your library, highlights, cards, review history, and settings are stored locally on your device. No data ever leaves your device to us. Luum makes network requests only when you ask it to: when you open a web page (Luum fetches that page, and any link you tap in its preview, directly from the website), or when you choose to download an optional Labs voice (Luum downloads the voice files from Hugging Face, huggingface.co). You agree to use Luum only for personal, non-commercial purposes. You will not:
Luum, including its code, design, visual elements, and all related content (excluding content you import), is owned by Alterras LLC and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. Your use of the app grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use it for personal purposes. You do not acquire any ownership rights.
The sample books included with Luum are public-domain works.
LUUM IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ALTERRAS DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS.
We do not warrant that Luum will open every file or web page, that its read-aloud, text extraction, or AI-generated answers, cards, and quizzes will be accurate or complete, or that using it will improve your learning, memory, or any other outcome.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ALTERRAS LLC AND ITS OWNERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AFFILIATES WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF LUUM.
OUR TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR YOUR USE OF LUUM IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE APP IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR TEN U.S. DOLLARS ($10), WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Alterras LLC from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your misuse of Luum, the content you import into it, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any applicable law.
You may stop using Luum at any time by deleting the app from your device. We may suspend or terminate your access to Luum if you violate these Terms. Upon termination, sections 3 and 7 through 14 survive and remain in effect.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of Luum will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New York, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will revise the "Last updated" date below and, where practical, provide notice within the app. Your continued use of Luum after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
Luum is free, with every feature and no limit on books. If you want to support the work, you can leave a tip in the app at the level you choose: A coffee, A generous tip, or Pay it forward.
A tip unlocks nothing. Each tip is a consumable in app purchase through Apple: a one off payment, not a subscription, that you can repeat as often as you like. Every feature is already yours whether you tip or not.
Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. There is nothing to renew and nothing to cancel. Prices are set in the App Store, may vary by region, and the price shown in the app at the time of the tip applies. Apple's standard refund policy applies to all tips; request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Alterras cannot issue refunds directly.
Luum is licensed, not sold, to you. Your use of the app is a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license for personal, non-commercial purposes, subject to these Terms and to Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA), which is incorporated here by reference. Except as expressly granted, all rights are reserved by Alterras LLC, and the app is provided without warranty as described in Section 9.
