Onbeat Running — Privacy Policy
A running cadence app by Alterras LLC
The short version
Your runs stay on your device. Onbeat writes your completed workouts to Apple Health, and on Apple Watch it reads your heart rate and calories while a workout is running. That data stays in Apple Health on your device and never reaches us. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. From version 1.1, Onbeat does not collect any data from you and does not transmit anything about you or your runs to any server we run. Versions before 1.1 include an optional feedback form; it is described below. Onbeat goes online only when you ask it to: to leave a tip (handled by Apple), or to open the community board, the newsletter or the App Store.
Apple Health
Onbeat asks for permission to work with Apple Health. Here is exactly what it does with that permission:
- It writes your completed runs. When a session finishes, Onbeat saves it to Apple Health as a workout. Both the iPhone app and the Apple Watch app do this.
- On iPhone, Onbeat reads nothing. The iPhone app requests write access only. It cannot see any of your health data.
- On Apple Watch, Onbeat reads heart rate and active energy while a workout is running, so the workout it records is complete and accurate. It reads these only during a live workout.
- None of it comes to us. Health data stays in Apple Health on your device, under Apple's protection. Onbeat does not transmit it anywhere, and we never see it.
- You can revoke this at any time in Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices.
What stays on your device and is never transmitted
- Your workouts and session history (dates, durations, steps per minute, workout names) stored locally on your device.
- Your settings (cadence, tone, volume, accent mode, voice cues) stored locally on your device.
- In versions before 1.1, your 7 day free trial clock, stored in your device Keychain so the trial cannot be restarted by reinstalling.
None of this is synced to us, uploaded, or shared. No account is required to use Onbeat.
Apple Watch sync goes device to device
When you use Onbeat on iPhone and Apple Watch together, session settings sync directly between the two devices using Apple's WatchConnectivity. That traffic goes phone to watch and watch to phone. It does not go through any server we run, and we never see it.
What we do not do
- No accounts. Onbeat has no sign up, no login, and no user profiles.
- No data collection. Onbeat does not send any information about you or your runs to any server we run.
- No analytics or usage tracking.
- No advertising, and no advertising identifier. We declare to Apple that Onbeat does not use the advertising identifier.
- No crash reporters.
- No third party SDKs that collect data.
- We never sell your data and never share it with third parties.
The feedback form in versions before 1.1
Versions of Onbeat before 1.1 include an optional feedback form on the purchase screen. Version 1.1 removes it, and from then on Onbeat sends nothing to our CloudKit database. If you submit the form:
- What is collected. Two free-text answers (what pulls you out of the zone on a run, and what the app could do better), optional age range and gender, your running experience, how you found Onbeat, your primary goal, the platform and the app version. There is no email field.
- How it is identified. Your submission is linked to a pseudonymous identifier that iCloud assigns to Onbeat; it does not include your name or email.
- Why. To understand the people who use Onbeat and improve it. As a thank-you, submitting unlocks about six months of free access. That unlock is saved as a separate record keyed to the same identifier.
- Where it lives. In Onbeat's CloudKit public database, under our developer account. We can read submissions; other users cannot. It is never sold or shared, and never used for advertising. To have your submission deleted, email us at the address below.
- Requires iCloud. If you are not signed in to iCloud, nothing is sent.
Pages Onbeat opens for you
- The community board. On iPhone, Request a feature or report a bug opens alterras.app/community-feedback in a Safari view. The link carries your Onbeat version and device model so a bug report arrives with its context. The board is a website run by Alterras: what you post there is public. Posting or voting asks for your email, which is never shown; it counts your vote once and lets us reply about your post. An optional box signs you up for news about new apps and newsletter posts: it sends a confirmation email first, through Brevo, the email service Alterras uses for that list, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe. Ask us at the address below to remove your posts or your email.
- The newsletter. Join the newsletter opens alterras.app/#newsletter in a Safari view. Onbeat itself never asks for or sends your email; if you sign up, you do it on that page.
- The App Store. Feedback on the App Store opens Onbeat's review page in the App Store.
Tips and earlier purchases
From version 1.1, Onbeat is free. Tips are in app purchases handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. A tip unlocks nothing. Onbeat checks on your device whether your Apple Account holds a purchase from an earlier version, only so it doesn't ask that person for a tip. Apple processes every transaction and handles all payment information. We never receive or store your payment details. See the Onbeat Running Terms of Service for the full tip terms.
Your choices, and deletion
- You can turn off Apple Health access at any time in Settings > Health > Data Access and Devices.
- Deleting the app removes your on-device history and settings from that device.
- From version 1.1 there is no data on our side to delete. If you submitted the feedback form in an earlier version, email us and we will delete it.
Children's privacy
Onbeat is not directed at children. From version 1.1, Onbeat collects no personal information from anyone, children included. The feedback form in versions before 1.1 never asks for a name or email, and submitting it is always voluntary.
